Rising Sea Levels – Global Warming or Human Shortsightedness!
In the past century of human evolution we have come to realize that a majority of the new technology we have developed as a race is having some very detrimental effects on our future. We are seeing a lot of the outcomes of our technological advancements as becoming a danger to our everyday lives.
It seems that for the past 100 years, as mankind progressed through these stages of technological advancement to where we are today, that the myriad side effects that were produced have now escalated to levels that actually threaten our continued existence on this planet we call home.
We are currently facing such problems as depletion of the O-Zone layer in our atmosphere, a lack of fresh water supply on land, the steady growth of the greenhouse effect, not to mention the alarming rate at which we are clearing our natural forests to rape them of their woodchip bearing trees. As a fellow human these issues both sadden me and scare me, to think about what the overall outcome will be!
One problem that we are facing, however, may not be caused by the human technology that we previously thought. The rising of the sea level, although a relatively new idea to humankind, has been attributed to Global Warming and a melting of the ice caps and polar regions, however this possibility has some serious flaws in it that mankind seems to have skipped over until now. In this blog I aim to show you how the previously thought causes for the rising sea level we have witnessed over the past century, could be attributed to a more mundane and plausible reason.
The chart named 'Recent Sea Level Rise' from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (see link below), indicates the rate that the sea level has risen from 1900 through to 2000. The past century has seen a rise in sea level of up to 20cm.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise
From 3,000 years ago to the start of the 19th century, records indicate that the sea level was almost constant, rising at 0.1 to 0.2 mm per year, however, since 1900 the level has risen at 1 to 3 mm per year and in 1992 satellite altimetry from TOPEX/Poseidon indicates a rate of about 3 mm per year.
This change is believed to be the first sign of the effect of global warming on sea level. It is also believed that Global Warming is predicted to cause significant rises in sea level over the course of the twenty-first century.
So now we can see that the evidence we have so far indicates a dramatic rise in sea level over the past century in relation to previous centuries since the last Ice Age. This in turn leads us to ask if the effects we are seeing in this century is the results of a previous century or centuries worth of damage to our environment, resulting from global warming.
To dispel this common myth about the melting of our ice caps and polar regions being the cause of this dramatic increase in sea level over the past century, I will show an example of a simple experiment that each and every one of you may perform at home to indicate the falacy in this belief.
For this experiment I am going to suggest that you use a small measuring cup or any vessel that is watertight and has a mark, or may be marked, to indicate the water level. This vessel full of water is going to be the model of our sea. Now, to add the ice caps or more concisely, icebergs. Take a frozen ice cube or two and drop them into your vessel full of water. Now that we have a model of the sea, complete with icebergs floating in it, we need to measure where the water level is sitting at. Either record the water level if you are using a measuring cup, or mark where the water level sits, if using a vessel without measurement markers.
Using the above experiment, you can see at various different intervals of time during the melting of the icebergs, that the water level does not change. The reason for this is a scientific truth about water displacement. I will explain this further using the model as our example.
When we started out, we created a model of our sea without icebergs. Lets say for instance that the model is 3 cups of water full, so our psuedo sea level is measured at 3 cups before the icebergs are added. Now let us assume that the icebergs (ice cubes) weigh exactly ½ a cup of water each. Now if we added two icebergs to the premade psuedo sea, each being ½ a cup of water in consistency, the water level of our psuedo sea will rise. The newly measured psuedo sea level is now 3 cups + ½ a cup + ½ a cup, bringing our psuedo sea level to 4 cups now. This is the completed model of our pseudo sea containing icebergs and indicating a sea level of 4 cups.
Now we can see that the addition of the icebergs to our psuedo sea has displayed the water displacement principal. When we added our icebergs to our sea model we noticed that the water level rose from 3 cups to 4 cups of water. This means that the icebergs have displaced exactly 1 cup of water, brining our psuedo sea level to 4 cups. So we can see now how water displacement is a very important factor in the rising sea levels, but can it be because of the melting of the ice caps and polar regions. Let’s take a look at the results of our experiment and see what happens to the psuedo sea level as the icebergs melt.
After our icebergs have melted in our psuedo sea, we can now see that the psuedo sea level of our experiment has mysteriously ….. dropped or risen? Well the strange truth is that the psuedo sea level has remained the same even after the melting of the icebergs that exist in our psuedo sea. Interesting. . . . . .
We must now explore why the psuedo sea level of our experiment did not alter even after the melting of the icebergs. The simple truth is that the water that was previously displaced by the icebergs was again replaced when the icebergs melted and therefore did not alter the level of our psuedo sea. This means that if we took an iceberg the size of a small family car and dropped it into a completely full olympic sized pool, that the amount of water that would overflow out of the pool would be equal to the amount of water displaced by the iceberg now positioned in the pool (thank’s to Archimedes). Then as the iceberg melted, the resulting water from the melt would in fact replace the exact amount of water that overflowed out of the pool, which in turn brings our pool’s water level back to completely full.
But what about the water that was spilt out of the pool, you ask? This is a good question but can be easily explained. We have to ask where the icebergs originated from. The water that was spilled out of the pool after the iceberg was placed in the pool, would have to return to the source from which the iceberg originated. This brings us to two possibilities, being (1) that the icebergs, or ice caps and polar regions of earth were in fact engineered somewhere other than Earths Oceans and then transported to their current locations, which at best is far fetched, or (2) that the ice caps and polar regions were formed from the oceans that they inhabit due to the fact that the polar regions are the two furthest placest from the sun, or the two coldest places on Earth. This second possibility seems to be much more feasible.
So now we can see that if it is true that the polar regions and ice caps of Earth were formed from the oceans that the caps inhabit, that there would have been no real drop in sea level as the icebergs came from the sea that they inhabit, meaning that the drop in the water level caused by the water forming into icebergs, would be immediately replaced by the displacement of the water when holding these icebergs. So the melting of the ice caps causing the rising sea level would be an impossibility unless the first option were possible, that all the ice found in our polar regions are an engineered product from some place other than Earth.
So what might be causing the sea level to rise so dramatically over the past century? Thinking about the possibilities explored above, Water Displacement is indeed the area we should be looking at, only not the water displacement of the icebergs and their melting, but instead let us look at a different water displacement that for so long has not been looked at.
We have seen that the melting of the ice caps and polar regions of Earth would not cause a noticeable change in the sea levels because the ice caps and polar regions were formed from the oceans that they inhabit. So this leads me to one conclusion. If water displacement is the cause of the rising sea levels that we are seeing over the past century, but it is not water displacement caused by icebergs and polar caps then we must look at what water displacement is caused by objects that were not formed by the oceans which house them. There is one very simple and obvious answer to this that would easily explain the rise in our sea level over the past century!
That’s right, for the past 100 years, man has been conceiving and constructing structures, be it boats, oil rigs, break walls, bridge pillars, etc, etc. The list goes on and on when thinking of man made structures that have been placed in our seas. Just considering boats alone, we can see how the water level must rise. From small boats such as speedboats, yachts and fishing trawlers, to name a few, their numbers must be in the millions across the world. Then there are the large boats as well, such as cruise ships, aircraft carriers and superliners. Each and every vessel sitting in the water at the current point in time must displace some water in some way, as a basic nautical law. When we add together the total sum of the water being displaced by each of these vessels, we begin to understand how the level of the sea might rise.
This leads to my final question about this whole topic that I invite you, the reader, to explore for yourself. The question that I pose in conclusion to this post is simply this! If we are smart enough to be able to design aircraft carriers and other such large ships as these, and have them function correctly in our oceans, then this would imply that we have a sophisticated knowledge of water displacement and it’s effects. So why has this theory not come to light until now, is this a conspiracy of some sort to help misguide human thought for some unforseen reason or could this possibly be one of the biggest bungles that humankind has been unfortunate enough to make. The answer is clear in my mind but I will leave it with you to decide what you think . . . . . . . . . .
Any comments about this theory would be greatly appreciated and can be forwarded to adeptsweblog@hotmail.com.
